The Marco Polo sheep (Ovis ammon polii) is regarded by many as the most prestigious trophy in Asian hunting. Ever since the Venetian explorer Marco Polo made his epic journey to the court of the Kublai Khan, some seven hundred years ago, the world has known of this wild sheep. With its enormous horns, the Marco Polo sheep is a member of the argali family of wild sheep. Only the Altai argali from Mongolia is larger, but the sweep of the horns of the Marco Polo sheep usually exceeds that of Altai argali, making it the most coveted of all wild sheep among hunters.
